Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review: The Ultimate Apple Watch Gets Even Better
Rating: 9.3/10
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the most capable Apple Watch Apple has made. It combines a rugged titanium design, an enormous and exceptionally bright display, advanced health and fitness tracking, 5G cellular connectivity, satellite communication, precision GPS, and substantially better battery life.
The catch? If you already own an Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Ultra 3 isn’t a revolutionary upgrade. But for someone buying their first Ultra—or upgrading from an older Apple Watch—it is an outstanding smartwatch.
Design: Rugged, Premium and Purpose-Built
The Ultra 3 retains the distinctive 49mm titanium case, with a flat sapphire-crystal display, raised edges for protection, an Action button, Digital Crown and prominent side button.
At 61.6 grams for the natural titanium model, it isn’t exactly lightweight, but the titanium construction keeps it surprisingly comfortable considering its size. It’s also rated for 100 meters of water resistance, supports swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving to 40 meters, and includes a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. (Apple)
This is a watch that feels like it was designed to be abused rather than babied.
Design score: 9.5/10
Display: One of the Best on Any Smartwatch
The Ultra 3’s display is excellent.
Apple has reduced the display borders by 24 percent while keeping the 49mm case size, giving you the largest active display area ever offered on an Apple Watch. The wide-angle OLED also improves readability when you’re looking at the watch from an angle. (Apple)
It reaches 3,000 nits peak brightness, making it exceptionally easy to read outdoors. The new LTPO3 technology also enables a 1Hz always-on refresh rate, so seconds can continue ticking on supported watch faces without requiring you to raise your wrist. (Apple)
For hiking, cycling or simply checking notifications in bright sunlight, this is about as good as smartwatch displays get.
Display score: 10/10
Performance and watchOS 26
The Ultra 3 uses Apple’s S10 chip, with a dual-core processor and four-core Neural Engine. It feels extremely responsive throughout normal use, from launching apps to navigating maps and workouts. (Apple)
watchOS 26 adds Apple’s Liquid Glass interface along with features such as wrist-flick gestures, Smart Stack improvements, Live Translation in Messages and enhanced Workout functionality. The Ultra 3 also gets Apple’s Workout Buddy experience powered by Apple Intelligence. (Apple)
The software remains one of Apple’s biggest advantages over competing sports watches: the Ultra 3 isn’t just a fitness computer. It’s a full-fledged smartwatch.
Performance/software score: 9.5/10
Fitness and GPS: Excellent for Serious Athletes
This is where the Ultra 3 really earns its “Ultra” name.
It includes precision dual-frequency GPS, heart-rate monitoring, running power, customizable workouts, heart-rate zones, training load, compass, always-on altimeter and a variety of specialized workout tools. (Apple)
For runners, cyclists, hikers and swimmers, the combination of GPS accuracy and Apple’s workout ecosystem is excellent.
Dedicated Garmin watches can still provide deeper training and endurance analytics, particularly for ultra-endurance athletes, but Apple has narrowed that gap considerably while offering a much better general-purpose smartwatch experience.
Fitness score: 9.5/10
Health Tracking: Extremely Comprehensive
The Ultra 3 is also a sophisticated health-tracking device.
It offers:
- ECG
- Heart-rate monitoring
- High/low heart-rate alerts
- Irregular rhythm notifications
- Sleep tracking
- Sleep apnea notifications
- Sleep score
- Wrist temperature
- Respiratory-rate tracking
- Blood oxygen features where supported
- Hypertension notifications
- Cycle tracking
- Vitals monitoring
Apple’s new hypertension notifications are particularly interesting because they can look for patterns associated with chronic high blood pressure. Sleep Score is another welcome addition for people who actually wear the watch overnight. (Apple)
Of course, these features aren’t a replacement for professional medical evaluation, but they make the Ultra 3 an impressive personal health-monitoring platform.
Health score: 9.5/10
Satellite Connectivity: A Genuine Safety Upgrade
One of the Ultra 3’s biggest additions is Emergency SOS via satellite.
When you’re outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, the watch can communicate via satellite for emergency services, messaging and location sharing. That’s potentially invaluable for hikers, campers, climbers and anyone who regularly travels into remote areas. (Apple)
It’s not something most people will use every week—but that’s exactly the point. Safety features are most valuable when you desperately need them.
5G Cellular
The Ultra 3 also moves to 5G cellular connectivity, allowing faster connectivity when you’re away from your iPhone and improving downloads, streaming and general online performance.
With a cellular plan, you can make calls, send messages, stream music and podcasts, and use emergency services without having your iPhone with you. (Apple)
For runners and outdoor enthusiasts, being able to leave the phone behind is a major advantage.
Connectivity score: 10/10
Battery Life: Finally a Major Strength
Battery life has historically been one of the Apple Watch’s biggest weaknesses compared with some Garmin competitors.
The Ultra 3 makes a meaningful improvement.
Apple rates it for:
- Up to 42 hours of normal use
- Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode
- Up to 20 hours of outdoor workout tracking with full GPS and heart-rate readings in Low Power Mode
- Up to 12 hours of battery life from a 15-minute charge
- Around 45 minutes for 0–80% charging
(Apple)
This doesn’t completely eliminate battery anxiety, but it makes the Ultra 3 far more practical for weekend trips and multi-day adventures.
For most users, charging every other day is realistic.
Battery score: 9/10
What’s Not So Great?
The Ultra 3 isn’t perfect.
It’s Big
The 49mm case is substantial. People with smaller wrists may find it uncomfortable, particularly while sleeping.
It’s Expensive
The official U.S. starting price is $799. (Apple)
That’s a lot for a smartwatch, especially when Apple’s regular Watch models cost considerably less.
Interestingly, current retail pricing can be substantially lower. Some listings are showing the Ultra 3 around $649, making it considerably more attractive at sale prices.
Ultra 2 Owners Don’t Need to Rush
This is probably the biggest criticism.
The Ultra 3 is better, but the differences aren’t dramatic enough to make the Ultra 2 obsolete. The bigger display, longer battery life, 5G and satellite communication are useful, but an Ultra 2 remains an excellent smartwatch.
If you already own an Ultra 2 and it’s working well, I’d wait for a larger upgrade.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs. Apple Watch Ultra 2
| Feature | Ultra 3 | Ultra 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 49mm titanium | 49mm titanium |
| Display | Larger active area | Excellent |
| Brightness | 3,000 nits | 3,000 nits |
| Chip | S10 | S9 |
| Cellular | 5G | LTE |
| Satellite communication | Yes | No |
| Battery | Up to 42 hrs | Up to 36 hrs |
| Low Power | Up to 72 hrs | Up to 72 hrs |
| GPS | Dual-frequency | Dual-frequency |
| Water resistance | 100m | 100m |
| ECG | Yes | Yes |
| Sleep tracking | Yes | Yes |
The Ultra 3 is the better watch, but the Ultra 2 can be the better value if you find one at a significant discount.
Who Should Buy the Ultra 3?
Buy it if you:
- Want the most capable Apple Watch
- Run, hike, cycle, swim or participate in outdoor sports
- Spend time away from cellular coverage
- Want satellite emergency communication
- Want the best Apple Watch battery life
- Want advanced health monitoring
- Prefer a rugged titanium design
- Want cellular connectivity without carrying your iPhone
Skip it if you:
- Mainly want notifications and basic fitness tracking
- Have small wrists
- Don’t care about GPS or outdoor features
- Already own an Ultra 2
- Don’t want to spend $799 on a smartwatch
Final Verdict
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is an exceptional smartwatch.
Its combination of a spectacular display, rugged titanium construction, advanced health sensors, excellent GPS, 5G, satellite communication and 42-hour battery life makes it much more than a luxury version of the standard Apple Watch.
The biggest issue is price—and the fact that Ultra 2 owners aren’t missing much by waiting.
But if you’re coming from an older Apple Watch, switching from a conventional smartwatch, or buying your first Ultra, this is arguably the best all-around smartwatch Apple has made.
Final Score: 9.3/10
Design: 9.5/10
Display: 10/10
Performance: 9.5/10
Fitness: 9.5/10
Health: 9.5/10
Connectivity: 10/10
Battery: 9/10
Value: 8/10
Bottom line: The Apple Watch Ultra 3 isn’t a revolutionary redesign—but it takes an already excellent smartwatch and makes it more capable, more independent and much better suited to multi-day adventures.
My buying take: At the full $799 price, it’s a premium purchase. At around $650–$700, the Ultra 3 becomes much easier to recommend. Current retail listings show discounts in that range, while Apple’s own refurbished Ultra 3 has also been listed at $599. (Apple)
