The iPhone 16 Pro remains a very compelling phone, particularly if you can find it at a good price now that newer iPhone generations are available.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Review: Still a Pro-Level Powerhouse

Rating: 9.2/10

The Apple iPhone 16 Pro is one of those phones that gets almost everything right. It combines a gorgeous 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display, Apple’s extremely powerful A18 Pro processor, an excellent triple-camera system, titanium construction, USB-C, Camera Control, and strong battery life into a relatively compact package.

It isn’t the newest iPhone anymore, but that actually makes it more interesting. With current-generation models available, the 16 Pro can now be an excellent value—particularly refurbished or discounted.

Design: Premium Without Being Excessive

The iPhone 16 Pro continues Apple’s titanium design language, available in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium and Desert Titanium.

At 199 grams, it isn’t featherlight, but it’s noticeably more manageable than the larger Pro Max. The 6.3-inch display also gives you considerably more screen real estate than previous 6.1-inch Pro models without making the phone enormous. (Apple Support)

The combination of titanium sides, textured matte glass and Ceramic Shield gives the phone a distinctly premium feel.

It’s also IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. (Apple Support)

The downside is that the titanium frame and glass back are still not immune to scratches or drops. A case remains a good idea for anyone who doesn’t want to gamble with a four-figure smartphone.

Design score: 9.5/10

Display: One of the Best Features

The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display is superb.

It features:

  • 2622 × 1206 resolution
  • 460 ppi
  • ProMotion up to 120Hz
  • Always-On display
  • HDR
  • Dynamic Island
  • True Tone
  • P3 wide color
  • Up to 2,000 nits outdoor peak brightness

(Apple Support)

The 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate remains one of the biggest differences between the Pro and standard iPhone experience. Scrolling feels incredibly smooth, animations are fluid, and games can take advantage of the higher refresh rate.

The thinner bezels also make the display feel larger without dramatically increasing the phone’s footprint.

Display score: 10/10

Performance: A18 Pro Is Serious Overkill

The A18 Pro is still an extremely powerful smartphone processor.

It features a six-core CPU, six-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. (Apple Support)

For normal tasks, the phone is practically effortless. Apps launch quickly, multitasking is smooth, and demanding games run extremely well.

Where the A18 Pro really distinguishes itself is sustained performance, gaming, photography and video processing. Apple redesigned the internal architecture of the 16 Pro to improve heat dissipation and claimed up to 20% better sustained performance. (Apple)

Unless you’re doing something unusually demanding, you’ll probably never come close to using all of its performance.

Performance score: 9.8/10

Camera: The Real Reason to Buy the Pro

The camera system is arguably the iPhone 16 Pro’s biggest selling point.

You get:

  • 48MP Fusion main camera
  • 48MP Ultra Wide
  • 12MP 5x Telephoto
  • LiDAR scanner
  • Camera Control
  • Macro photography
  • Apple ProRAW
  • Photographic Styles
  • Night mode
  • Spatial photos and video

(Apple Support)

The 48MP Ultra Wide upgrade is particularly useful because it isn’t simply there for extremely wide shots—it also enables much higher-resolution macro photography.

And unlike some previous generations, the smaller 16 Pro gets the same 5x telephoto capability as the Pro Max. (Apple)

Video Is Exceptional

The 16 Pro is arguably even more impressive as a video camera.

It can record 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision, giving you extremely high-quality slow-motion footage and enormous flexibility when editing. Apple describes this as the highest resolution/frame-rate combination available on a smartphone at launch. (Apple)

For someone who wants a phone that can double as a serious video camera, the 16 Pro is difficult to beat.

Camera score: 9.8/10

Camera Control: Useful, But Not Essential

Apple added a dedicated Camera Control button on the side.

A click launches the camera, while additional gestures can be used to adjust things such as zoom, exposure and depth of field. (Apple)

It’s a clever addition, especially for people who take lots of photos.

However, I wouldn’t consider it a reason by itself to upgrade. The traditional touchscreen camera interface is already excellent.

Think of Camera Control as a refinement rather than a revolutionary feature.

Apple Intelligence: Promising, but Not the Main Reason to Buy

The 16 Pro was designed around Apple Intelligence, powered in part by the A18 Pro’s Neural Engine.

Apple’s approach emphasizes on-device processing and privacy, with Private Cloud Compute handling requests that require additional processing. (Apple Support)

The important thing, however, is that Apple Intelligence doesn’t suddenly transform the iPhone 16 Pro into a completely different device.

It’s useful, particularly for writing assistance, notification and communication features, image-related tasks and Siri improvements, but the iPhone remains an excellent phone even if you don’t care much about AI.

Battery Life: Very Good

Battery life is another strong point.

Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro for up to 27 hours of video playback, with up to 22 hours of streamed video playback. (Apple Support)

Real-world battery life obviously varies considerably depending on brightness, cellular use, gaming, GPS and camera use.

For normal users, though, the 16 Pro generally has enough endurance to comfortably make it through a full day.

USB-C charging is also a major convenience, particularly if you already use USB-C accessories for your Mac, iPad or other devices.

MagSafe charging supports up to 25W with a compatible 30W-or-higher adapter. (Apple Support)

Battery score: 9/10

USB-C Is More Than Just a Charging Port

The move to USB-C isn’t merely about using a different cable.

The 16 Pro supports USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s, along with DisplayPort functionality. (Apple Support)

That’s particularly useful for photographers and videographers who need to move large ProRAW photos or ProRes video files.

It’s one of those features that casual users may never notice but professionals will appreciate.

What’s Not Perfect?

1. The 128GB Base Storage

The base iPhone 16 Pro starts at 128GB.

That’s adequate for many people, but it feels stingy on a phone positioned toward photographers and videographers.

If you intend to shoot lots of 4K video, 256GB is the configuration I’d recommend.

2. Charging Is Still Behind Some Competitors

Apple has improved charging, but Android manufacturers have pushed much harder on charging speeds.

The iPhone 16 Pro isn’t terrible—it simply isn’t class-leading.

3. Apple Intelligence Isn’t a Killer Feature

Apple’s AI features are useful, but they shouldn’t be the primary reason you buy the phone.

The hardware, camera system, display and ecosystem are considerably more compelling.

4. The Camera Bump Is Still Large

The three-camera system protrudes substantially from the back.

It’s a necessary tradeoff for the camera hardware, but the phone doesn’t sit completely flat on a table without a case.

iPhone 16 Pro vs. iPhone 16

The Pro earns its premium through several important upgrades.

For everyday users, the standard iPhone 16 is arguably the better value.

But if photography, gaming, display quality or video production matters to you, the 16 Pro is worth the upgrade.

Is the iPhone 16 Pro Still Worth Buying?

Yes—but price matters.

Because it is no longer Apple’s current Pro model, I wouldn’t recommend paying close to its original flagship pricing.

The 16 Pro becomes particularly attractive when discounted or refurbished.

For example, current product listings show refurbished/used 16 Pro configurations at substantially varying prices, so shopping around is important.

If you’re buying used or refurbished, I’d prioritize:

256GB + excellent battery health + unlocked + reputable seller

over simply choosing the cheapest 16 Pro you can find.

Who Should Buy the iPhone 16 Pro?

Buy it if you:

  • Want a relatively compact flagship iPhone
  • Care about photography and video
  • Want a 120Hz display
  • Play demanding games
  • Need USB 3 file transfers
  • Want 5x optical zoom
  • Want Apple Intelligence support
  • Prefer titanium construction
  • Want a premium iPhone without going to the Pro Max’s size

Skip it if you:

  • Already own an iPhone 15 Pro and don’t need the camera improvements
  • Don’t care about 120Hz
  • Mostly use your phone for messaging, social media and streaming
  • Want the longest possible battery life
  • Can get a newer iPhone Pro for only slightly more money

Final Verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro is an outstanding smartphone.

Its combination of the A18 Pro processor, 120Hz OLED display, titanium construction, excellent cameras, 5x telephoto, spectacular video recording and USB-C makes it a genuinely “Pro” device rather than simply a more expensive iPhone.

Its biggest weakness today isn’t the hardware—it’s the fact that newer iPhones exist.

That means the 16 Pro makes the most sense as a discounted or refurbished flagship rather than a full-price purchase.

Final Score: 9.2/10

Design: 9.5/10
Display: 10/10
Performance: 9.8/10
Cameras: 9.8/10
Video: 10/10
Battery: 9/10
Software: 9/10
Value: 8.5/10

Bottom line: The iPhone 16 Pro is still a fantastic phone. If you can find the 256GB model at a substantial discount, it may actually be one of the smarter iPhone purchases available—giving you flagship-level cameras, performance and display technology without necessarily paying for the newest generation.

If you’re comparing it against the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro, the value equation changes considerably, but the 16 Pro remains a very capable device.
